3/1 A manuscript volume, entitled The charter of the town of Southampton anno regni regis Caroli 1st xvi, containing an analysis of the charter, with a commentary on its contents, by John Speed. This is in all probability the 'earlier work' referred to in The history and antiquity of Southampton with some conjectures concerning the Roman Clausentum by John Speed MD ed. E.R.Aubrey (Southampton Record Society, 8; 1909) pp. xxxii-xxxiii. The volume was apparently presented to the Corporation of Southampton in 1759. 3/2 A manuscript introductory essay by Thomas Chalmers, DD, to a new edition of William Romaine Treatises on the life, walk and triumph of faith, first published in 1822 and republished in 1824 with the introductory essay.

Administrative / Biographical History
The library of the Reverend John Bullar was presented in April 1868 to the Hartley Institution (administrative predecessor of the University of Southampton). It contained many early works on theology, literature, philosophy and history and it is described in the printed catalogues of the library from the time, most extensively in Hartley Institution Southampton. The Library catalogue. Part II (Southampton, 1876) pp. 39-56. There was, in addition, a small quantity of manuscript material which has now been grouped to form MS 3.
