Scope and Content

This collection consists of The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane Treasury Sheets from the 1920s, showing general expenditure for the theatre as well as for the current show and specific records relating to the production Rose Marie.

Administrative / Biographical History

Under managing director Sir Alfred Butt, the 1920s saw The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane enjoy great box office success with musicals such as Rose Marie, Desert Song and Show Boat.

Rose Marie is an operetta-style musical with music by Rudolf Friml and Herbert Stothart, and book and lyrics by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was produced at Drury Lane in London in March 1925, enjoying an extraordinary run of 581 performances and closed in March 1927. The original production had a chorus of eighty and was London's most successful Broadway show after World War I until it was surpassed by Oklahoma! in 1947.

This archive is available for consultation in the V&A Department of Theatre & Performance's Reading Room, which is located at Blythe House, 23 Blythe Rd, Olympia, London, W14 0QX. The Reading Room is open Tuesday to Fridays between 10.15 am and 4.30 pm, access to it is by appointment only. Scope and Content

This series contains five volumes with printed sheets detailing the general accounts of the theatre (including during times of closures), as well as expenditure specific to the current show.

Typically are found salary details for the technical staff, the orchestra, front of house and the refreshment department as well as general expenditure and running costs.

Rose Marie went into production in March 1925 and records specifically to do with this show were kept in separate books.

Each large sized bound volume, approximately 18 inches by 20 inches and in relatively good condition, is labelled "Theatre Royal Drury Lane Limited Treasury Sheets." plus the relevant date covered.
