This archive consists of papers relating to the administrative and creative work of Cheek by Jowl.

Administrative / Biographical History

Cheek by Jowl was formed by director Declan Donnellan and designer Nick Ormerod in 1981 with a manifesto to "re-examine classical texts, avoiding directorial and design concepts, and to focus on the actor's art". The company name alludes to a line from A Midsummer Night's Dream and was chosen to convey the aspiration for an intimacy between the actors, the audience and the text. Beginning as a small touring company, Cheek by Jowl built an international reputation for innovative productions of Shakespeare, Restoration comedies and lesser known European classics as well as new writing (including the premiere of Donnellan's own play Lady Betty). In 1998 Ormerod, Donnellan and the company took a sabbatical to work on other projects, returning in 2001 with the British premiere of Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul.

This archive is available for consultation in the V&A Department of Theatre & Perfomance's reading room, which is located at Blythe House, 23 Blythe Rd, Olympia, London, W14 0QX. The reading room is open Tuesday to Friday's between 10.15 am and 4.30 pm, access to it is by appointment only. To request an appointment please email tmenquiries@vam.ac.uk or telephone 020 7942 2698.

Additionally access to some of these files may be restricted. These are identified at file level.

Conditions Governing Use

Archive material may not be photocopied. Arrangements can be made to photograph material in the search room using non-flash photography.
