Scope and Content

  • Catalogue of Bird's Bones in the Collection of Alfred and Edward Newton, 1858. A set of 6 notebooks, each about 50 pages.
  • Notebook on Bird's Eggs, with entries from 1855 to 1859.
  • Catalogue of a Collection of Birds' Eggs belonging to Alfred and Edward Newton. Entries start in 1848 (ca. 183 pages).

Administrative / Biographical History

Alfred Newton (1829-1907) studied at the University of Cambridge 1848-1853. He then studied wildlife while travelling abroad in Europe and America until 1862.

He was Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at the University of Cambridge from 1866 to 1907.

Living at Magdalene College, he pursued his interest in all branches of ornithology. He had a large collection of specimens as well as an extensive library.

His collections were bequeathed to the University.

Manuscripts can be consulted on appointment only. The Museum of Zoology is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. Access and reproduction is at the discretion of the Archivist.
