Petty Papers

Scope and Content

The collection includes two registers of his bibliographical acquisitions, three volumes of his notes towards his Lancashire flora pieces, many receipts and letters concerning his book purchases, subscriptions, and a few letters on other subjects. Also there is an anonymous 19th century volume of manuscript poems (marked 'Chip'), a religious diary, mostly destroyed, a book of 19th century recipes (the earliest dated 1849), and two notebooks kept at Oxford University in 1922, one on philosophical lectures, the other on Juvenal.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1889 Petty was living in Chapeltown Road, Leeds, but soon after moved to Ulverston, first at Dykelands and later at 24 Queen Street. He wrote a series of tracts, 'The constituents of the North Lancashire flora: 1597-1893' (1894), published in eighteen parts by a local botanical society.

Custodial History

When examined in 2001 the letters and press cuttings of the Very Rev'd SC Carpenter had been thrust in with the loose Petty papers, with the effect that it was difficult to sort them, and it is possible that there are items wrongly placed.
