David Guthrie was a trainee journalist with D.C. Thomson, Dundee. He retired to Jersey and died there in 1941.

The initial sketches were copied from originals in Brighton Public Library, 1923-1924, and subsequently extended with additions from Guthrie's own observations while in retirement in Jersey.
