Administrative / Biographical History

Trade and industry in Dundee expanded considerably from the early 19th Century. Following the 1815 Harbour Act, the Commissioners for the harbour implemented plans by Thomas Telford to provide for larger sailing ships, cargoes and local ferries. By the end of the 19th Century, the Harbour Trustees ran the busy port; they later became known as the Dundee Port Authority.
