Sir Walter Alexander Raleigh was born in  1861 . He was educated at University College, London, England and King's College, Cambridge, England. He was Professor of Modern Literature at University College, Liverpool, England before being appointed Professor of English Language and Literature at the  University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1900. He remained there until 1904. Thereafter he took up the position of Professor of English Literature at the  University of Oxford, England. He became a fellow of Merton College, Oxford, England, in  1914 . His publications included, The English Novel,  1894 , Robert Louis Stevenson: An Essay,  1895 , Wordsworth,  1903 , and Six Essays on Johnson,  1910 , and many other sundry articles. He was knighted in  1911 . He died in  1928 .
