Scope and Content

The collection contains: notes of Greenfield's lectures on pathology taken down 1882-1883; lectures from 1888-1889; lectures 1889-1890 with syllabus of a course on general pathology and pathological anatomy; and, class lists 1881-1882 and 1911-1912 (Da. Class lists).

Administrative / Biographical History

William Smith Greenfield was born in Salisbury on 9 January 1846. He studied at University College, London. Greenfield was a Medical Registrar to St. Thomas 's Hospital, London, 1872-1874, and Demonstrator in Morbid Anatomy and Pathology at St. Thomas's. In 1878 he was Professor of Pathology at the Brown Institute, London University. From 1881 until 1912, he was Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Clinical Medicine at Edinburgh University. Professor William Smith Greenfield died at Juniper Green, Edinburgh, on 12 August 1919.
