Scope and Content

Letter from James VI, of Scotland, to George Keith, Earl Marischal, recommending Andrew Adie for principalship of Marischal College, Aberdeen, 5 May 1615.

George Keith, fourth Earl Marischal, Baron Keith and Altrie, founded (the Protestant) Marischal College in 1593, and assumed the role of Chancellor there until his death in 1623.

Andrew Adie (or Aedie) was Principal of Marischal College from 1616 - 1619. His works include Pastoria in Decem Distributa Eclogas (Danzig: M. Rhodus, 1610); Tracatus de Noctuambulonum Ingenio et Natura (Danzig: Hunefeld, 1612); and Clavis Philosophiae Moralis, sive in Aristotelis Nicomacheia Commentarius (In nobili Oppenheimio: sumtibus H. Galleri, 1614).

Administrative / Biographical History

James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother. He was learned, taught by some of the best tutors available in the Scottish Humanist school, but also deeply superstitious, secretive and something of a misanthropist. He married Anne of Denmark in 1590, though he continued to have male favourites, and inherited the English crown from Elizabeth I in 1603. He kept both countries peaceful during the Thirty Years' War, and died in 1625.
