Records of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers (Aberdeen Branch)

Memorandum of agreement between John Milne and Co. Ltd, Dyce, Aberdeen, and the National Union of General and Municipal Workers, re. wages and conditions of employment at Dyce Works, Aberdeen, 13 Jul 1939.

In 1920 there were 10 separate branches of the General and Municipal Workers' Union in Aberdeen, each representing different membership sections, viz. Gas workers; electricity workers; lighting, links and parks and bathing departments; cleansing, streets and roads, quarries, city hospitals and watchmen; building trade labourers; slaters' labourers; harbour, combworks, bobbinmills and sawmills; chemical, seedcrushing, soap and candle works, manure and fish products; red leaders and boiler scalers; shipbuilding, engineering and general labourers. A number of older, sectional unions merged with the G.M.W.U. in the early twentieth century.

Hugh Armstrong Clegg, General Union; a study of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers (Oxford, 1954) and the Union's own publication Sixty years of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers, 1889 - 1949 (London, 1949) contain more details about the organisation.
