A collection of geometrical problems and theorems, etc., 1796

Scope and Content

Collection of geometrical problems and theorems, etc., 1796.

The first part (pages 1 - 49) of this small volume contains corrollaries given in West's Elements of Mathematics, which seem to need demonstration ; and the remainder (pages 51 - 75), an essay on the doctrine of Porisms, and application thereof to the solution of some important problems.

Administrative / Biographical History

This volume has been connected with Robert Eden Scott (1770 - 1811), philosopher, and a G. Hadden, of whom little is known.

In 1796 Scott was a regent at King's College, Aberdeen, where he taught maths alongside other curriculum subjects. However, there is no record of a student named G. Hadden registered at King's College at this time:

One George Hadden, son of Alexander Hadden, merchant, Aberdeen, was a tertian (3rd year student) at Marischal College, Aberdeen in 1790.

Gavin Hadden, Lord Provost of Aberdeen was an assessor at Marischal College, 1821 - 1833, and procurator at King's College in 1833. His sons, William Inness Hadden, merchant, Riga, and James (Jacobus) Farquhar Hadden, manufacturer, Aberdeen, attended Marischal College in 1822 and 1824, respectively. No further G. Haddens have been identified in the records of King's or Marischal Colleges, Aberdeen.
