Scope and Content

Comprises illustrations of most of the ancient churches and chapels and many of the modern ones in the undivided diocese, as re-constituted in 1836. The churches and chapels in question are listed in Kirk's 1938 catalogue.

Administrative / Biographical History

The modern Diocese of Ripon, reconstituted in 1836 as the first new diocese to be created in England since the Reformation, was formed out of parts of the older dioceses of Chester and York. It then remained unchanged in geographical area until 1888, when parts of it were transferred to the subsequently-created Diocese of Wakefield. The present collection of illustrations must have been compiled between 1836 and 1888, since many of the churches included in it now fall within the area later allotted to the new Diocese of Wakefield.

Arrangement

The arrangement of the illustrations in the three volumes does not appear to be systematic, necessitating the use of the index volume to trace individual churches.
