Administrative / Biographical History

The Association was formed in 1918 under the name of the National Union of Scientific Workers. In 1925, following a decline in membership, the decision was taken to de-register as a trade union and to change the name to the Association of Scientific Workers. Although membership increased for a time, during the economic conditions of the 1930s, membership fell to 1,000, and in 1940 it re-registered as a trade union. By 1943 membership had increased to 14,000, and by the 1960s it had reached 22,000. In 1968 it merged with the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives and Technicians to form the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs (ASTMS), which since 1988 has been the Manufacturing Science and Finance Union
