Administrative / Biographical History

Sarah Ann Broadbent was the daughter of John Broadbent (1796-1880) and his wife Esther Butterworth. Her grandfather John Broadbent (1758-1837) who came from Helme, Meltham, near Huddersfield, owned a small wool manufacturing business, which expanded during the Industrial Revolution. By 1796 the family was established at Longwood Edge (which was a farm as well as a dwelling), but later moved to Lindley. During the 19th century, members of the family were prominent in local and national affairs, including Sir William Broadbent (Sarah's brother), who served as a physician to Queen Victoria and Edward VII, and was knighted in 1893
