Comprises notes from text-books, references to patents, chemical data, offprints, etc., concerning analysis, drugs, food adulteration, etc. The material relates to Chaston Chapman's work at St Albans on water analysis for the Shale Syndicate Co., and the Marmite Food Extract Co., among others. Typical subjects treated at length are arsenic in coal and coke, essential oil of hops, seal, cedar and sandal wood oils, and some compounds of dextrose with the oxides of nickel, chromium and iron.

Administrative / Biographical History
Alfred Chaston Chapman was educated at Leeds Grammar School and University College, London. He was President of the Society of Public Analysts, 1914-1916, President of the Institute of Brewing, 1911-1913, and President of the Institute of Chemistry, 1921-1924. His collection of books on the history of brewing was donated to the University of Leeds
