Scope and Content

Comprises the mainly typescript drafts, with some manuscript revisions and signatures, of many poems composed by younger poets and published in earlier issues of Poetry and audience, from ca. 1954 to 1972. The 33 poets represented in this collection are as follows: Martin Bell; Francis Berry; Thomas Blackburn; Alan Brownjohn; Kevin Crossley-Holland; Gavin Ewart; Roy Fisher; Robert Flanaghan; Tony Harrison; David Herbert; Geoffrey Hill; Philip Hobsbaum; Brendan Kennelly; James Kirkup; Edward Lucie-Smith; Norman MacCraig; Mao Tse-Tung; A.R. Mortimer; Kenneth Muir; Christopher Pilling; Peter Porter; Peter Redgrove; Vernon Scannell; Jon Silkin; James Simmons; Robin Skelton; Iain Crichton Smith; James Sutherland Smith; Ken Smith; Stevie Smith; Randolph Stow; Nathaniel Tarn; and William Price Turner. The five poems by Mao Tse-Tung are introduced and translated by Michael Bullock and Jerome Ch'en.

Administrative / Biographical History

The literary journal Poetry and audience has been published at the University of Leeds since 1954. Many of the earlier contributors were Gregory Fellows in Poetry.
