Administrative / Biographical History
John Evelyn (1620-1706), the virtuoso, was a student at the Middle Temple and fellow commoner at Balliol, Oxford, before joining Charles I in 1642 and travelling. Later in life he helped to found the Royal Society. His literary works include his Diary, which was first published in 1818 and 1819.
