J.A. Cowie was a teacher with a particular interest in children's literature. She became a close friend of Rosemary Sutcliff, although the exact circumstances of how they first met are unknown.

Letters are arranged in chronological order. Where letters are undated and it has been possible to make a rough estimate of date based on content, letters have been sorted into sequence according to this rough estimate. In some cases it has been impossible to assign a date, and these undated letters appear at the end of the sequence.

Following J.A. Cowie's death, these letters passed into the possession of her cousin, Ruth Cowie Christie. Ruth Cowie Christie donated the letters to Seven Stories in 2005.
