Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935), was an archaeologist, soldier and author. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography. Charlotte Frances Shaw (d 1943) was the wife of George Bernard Shaw.

Acquisition Information

W.M.L. Escombe bequeathed the volumes to the Library, where they were received in 1974.

Custodial History

In 1927 Lawrence gave his book, 'Minorities', to Mrs Shaw, who gave Lawrence her book at the same time. Mrs Shaw gave 'Minorities' to J.G. Wilson (Lawrence's executor) in 1940. In 1960 Wilson sold both volumes to W.M.L. Escombe.
