Scope and Content

Writings and tables relating to musical theory, ca. 1777-1808; one volume by William Boyce, six by Marmaduke Overend, and two by J.W. Callcott. Workings by John Farey appear throughout.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Boyce (1710-1779) was a musician. Marmaduke Overend (d 1790), organist and composer, was a pupil of William Boyce. John Wall Callcott (1766-1821) was a composer. John Farey (1766-1826), principally a geologist, wrote articles on many subjects, including music. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Acquisition Information

The papers were bought from the Royal Institution by the Friends of the Bodleian in 1972.
