Notebook of Sir Henry Savile, with a description by P.E. Matheson

Scope and Content

Notebook of Sir Henry Savile compiled during a continental tour, c. 1581. The notebook includes a commentary on Aristotle, Meteorologica, dated '10 Maij. 1581. Vratislaviae' (Wroclaw, Poland); notes in Italian on scientific subjects; and extracts from Themistius on the Posterior Analytics. Savile's name does not appear; the attribution to him is made by Gamillscheg & Harlfinger (IA, p. 79, no. 116) on the basis of the Greek script.

The accompanying MSS (MS. Eng. misc. d. 204) is a description of the notebook by P.E. Matheson.

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Henry Savile (1549-1622) was a scholar, see the Dictionary of National Biography for further details.

Percy Ewing Matheson (1859-1946) was a Fellow of New College (1881-1946), and a classical scholar.
