Collection of photographic views of Chilwell, Nottinghamshire and the surrounding area,1998

Scope and Content

The collection comprises black and white copies made in 1998 of photographs taken between about1913 and 1991. The photographs depict buildings in Chilwell, Nottinghamshire including domestichouses, pubs, Chilwell Brickyard, shops, Chilwell Hall, Gregory's Nurseries and two views of theinside of Alfred Mears' cobblers shop, Old Chilwell. Other photographs show individuals and groupsof people such as members of the Mears family, children at Meadow Lane School, Women's VoluntaryService, Chilwell cricket team, and 1st Chilwell and Attenborough scout group. There are alsophotographs of events in the village such as the demolition of Chilwell Bridge and Myford's factory,Chilwell jubilee bonfire, and the opening of Chilwell almshouses. Some views of Beeston,Nottinghamshire are also included.

Administrative / Biographical History

The original photographs from which the collection was made were taken by Alfred Mears, a localman from Chilwell, Nottinghamshire.
