Scope and Content

The paintings and photographs are held within a large album, providing a record of a journey byunidentified travellers to Canada from Liverpool in 1884. The 133 paintings are small landscapesdepicting a number of subjects, including the following: Liverpool, River Mersey, Moville, LoughFoyle, icebergs, Bellisle, St Lawrence River, Gasp, Isle of Orleans, Montmorenci Falls, PointLevis, Quebec, The Thousand Islands, Sorel, Brockville, Deplau Rapids, Lake St Francis, Long SaultRapids, Cornwall Canal, Coteau, Lake St Louis, Lake George, Lake Champlain, Port Henry, NiagaraFalls, Lake Ontario, and Toronto. There are fifteen photographs, all black and white, illustratingthe following subjects: the Polynesian (a boat), the Hudson and Catskills, the Lachine Canal,Montmorenci Falls, Niagara Falls, Chicoutimi and Saguenay.

Administrative / Biographical History

The identity of the artist of these paintings is unknown. The title page of the album in whichthe paintings appear is entitled 'our silver wedding trip', with the date 1884 and the initialsI.M.M. In a different and later hand, the title page has been annotated 'the British Association.'It is not clear what, if any, association there might be with the British Association for theAdvancement of Science, which was founded in the 1830s.
