Scope and Content

Papers, photographs and scrapbooks covering the professional career of Sir Norman Jeffcoate, President of the RCOG and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Liverpool, including his overseas visits as Sims-Black Professor, events attended as RCOG President, and discussions about specialty topics and his remembrances of Professor William Blair-Bell.

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Norman Arthur Jeffcoate (1907-1992) specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology after qualifying with First Class Honours from Liverpool University in 1929. from 1930 until his retirement in 1972 he served on the teaching staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. By 1933 he had been appointed Honorary Consultant at the Women's Hospital, Liverpool Maternity Hospital and the David Lewis Northern Hospital. In 1945 he became the University's first full-time Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was President of the RCOG from 1969-1972 and was knighted in 1970.

Custodial History

S28/1-5 were presented by Sir Norman in September-October 1991. A further deposit (S28/6-15) was made by his son, Professor S L Jeffcoate, in April 1997.
