Reprint from the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the British Empire of the Lloyd Roberts Memorial Lecture delivered at St Mary's Hospital, Manchester by Sir William Fletcher Shaw in October 1950, entitled 'The Birth of a College', including his memories of David Lloyd Roberts as his locum tenens and his reputation as an advocate of antiseptic surgery, the background to the foundation of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, personality sketches of William Blair-Bell, Comyns Berkeley, Ewen Maclean, Sir Francis Champneys, Thomas Eden, and John Fairbairn, and the difficulties faced in establishing the College.
