Administrative / Biographical History
Charles Gibson Lowry was a Founder Member of the RCOG and one of the nine signatories to the Articles of Association of the College. He was educated at Londonderry and Queen's College, Belfast, and graduated in 1904. He was awarded the Coulter Exhibition at the Royal Victoria Hospital, while taking up roles as physician and surgeon there. He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War, and came under the influence of Blair-Bell and Sir Robert Jones while posted to Liverpool. He was appointed Professor of Midwifery at Belfast in 1921, and his contribution to obstetrics and gynaecology in Ireland was outstanding, being a major factor in the establishment of the Royal Maternity Hospital in 1933.
