Administrative / Biographical History
Formed in 1887 as the Scientific Instrument Makers' Trade Society, the society later became the Amalgamated Instrument Makers' Society. It amalgamated with the Amalgamated Society of Engineers and eight other unions to form the Amalgamated Engineering Union in 1920.

The archive has been deposited in the Centre on indefinite loan by the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers. The first deposit consisted of fifteen boxes of early minutes collected by Richard Storey on 1st November 1984.
