Hannah Scott collection

Scope and Content

The collection comprises of correspondence by Hannah Scott to or regarding her son Robert Falcon Scott.

Administrative / Biographical History

Hannah Scott (nee Cuming) was the daughter of William Bennett Cuming of Plymouth, a Lloyd's surveyor. She married John Scott, a brewer, in 1861 and had four daughters - Etttie, Rose, Grace and Katherine - and two sons, Robert Falcon (born in 1868) and Archie. The family lived at Outlands, near Devonport. After the brewery was sold, the family had to lease Outlands. The capital from the sale was soon reduced to almost nothing. John Scott died in October 1897, leaving Hannah close to penury and dependent on the financial support of her two sons, Robert and Archie.
