Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall Archive

Extant archive of Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall, Manchester. The archive is fragmentary, with many incomplete record series. Only one volume of House Committee minutes is present (HEJ/1), and very few of the Warden's files appear to have survived. No records appear to have survived for other student committees. The archive includes some financial records dating from the 1950s and 1960s (HEJ/2).

There is also an incomplete set of Hall newsletters (HEJ/6), a small collection of Hall prospectuses (HEJ/3) and photographs of the Hall and its students (HEJ/4).

Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall was a University of Manchester hall of residence for women .

It was founded in 1919 by Sir James Jones, a Rochdale businessman, in memory of his son, Ellis Llwyd Jones. Jones also generously endowed the University's department of education of the deaf at the same time. The Hall was intended primarily for women students studying at the department of education of the deaf. However, this was not a required qualification for residence.

Unlike other University halls, Ellis was situated at some distance from the University campus in Talbot Road, Old Trafford. This was due to the proximity of the Royal Residential Schools of the Deaf, with which the Department of Education of the Deaf had close contacts. In the 1960s, the Schools moved from Old Trafford, and the Hall decided to relocate. In 1981 the Hall moved to Victoria Park, adjacent to Dalton Hall. In 1987, Dalton and Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall began the process of amalgamation, with a unified administration being introduced in 1989, together with a new name, Dalton-Ellis Hall.

The Hall was headed by a Warden, and governed by a University committee, the Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall Delegacy.

The collection is open to any accredited reader.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 1998. Under Section 33 of the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), The John Rylands University Library (JRUL) holds the right to process personal data for research purposes. The Data Protection (Processing of Sensitive Personal Data) Order 2000 enables the JRUL to process sensitive personal data for research purposes. In accordance with the DPA, the JRUL has made every attempt to ensure that all personal and sensitive personal data has been processed fairly, lawfully and accurately.

Users of the archive are expected to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, and will be required to sign a form acknowledging that they will abide by the requirements of the Act in any further processing of the material by themselves.

Photocopies and photographic copies of material in the archive can be supplied for private study purposes only, depending on the condition of the documents.

A number of items within the archive remain within copyright under the terms of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988; it is the responsibility of users to obtain the copyright holder's permission for reproduction of copyright material for purposes other than research or private study.

The archive is believed to have been maintained at the Hall until the merger with Dalton Hall, when it was transferred to storage at Dalton. It was transferred to the University Archives in December 2008, along with the Dalton Hall archive.

The Dalton Hall archive has a file on the ELJ relocation to Victoria Park (HDH/3/18). The Vice-Chancellor’s archive has one file on the Hall, VCA/7/206 (1938-1950) . Minutes of the Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall Delegacy and Committee form part of the University committees archive, USC/18 ( 1919-1965) and the Committee USC/68 . Warden's reports were submitted to the annual report of the University Council (UOP/2).
