Scope and Content

Three heraldic manuscripts bound together:

  • (a) Folios 3-93: Emblazoned coats of arms of English kings and nobles from Brutus to James I;
  • (b) Folios 97-293: Armorial of English nobility, alphabetically arranged, with coats emblazoned up to the letter O;
  • (c) Folios 294v-315v: Knights of the Garter from Edward III to the accession of Elizabeth (coats not emblazoned), and an unfinished armorial of Scottish kings, etc. (folios 358-370).

Acquisition Information

Purchased by Mrs Enriqueta Rylands, on behalf of the John Rylands Library, in 1901 from James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford.

Custodial History

Formerly part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, the Library of the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres, from Haigh Hall, Wigan, Lancashire (bookplate inside front cover). Also written is the name of a former owner, Sir Reginald Graham, and the date 1866.
