Zuckerman Archive: Anatomical Society

Scope and Content

Solly Zuckerman was a member of the Anatomical Society from 1935 until his death in 1993. He served as its President for the year 1967-1968 and Vice-President for the year 1974-75 and was from the time of his move to Birmingham University in 1946 until his appointment as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Defence in 1960 a member of its Council.

Most of the contents of this series are of a routine character. The papers relating to annual general meetings, ordinary meetings and summer (later spring) meetings, and the set of accounts, files SZ/AS/5-7, do not form complete sequences by any means. File SZ/AS/2 includes correspondence relating to the 1957 summer meeting of the Society hosted by the Department of Anatomy at Birmingham University, and to Zuckerman's nomination as President of the Society in 1967. Before accepting the nomination, he had to seek the permission of the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Burke Trend. The contents of File SZ/AS/9 refer to Zuckerman's nomination of J.T. Eayrs for the Symington Memorial Prize in 1953.
