Scope and Content

Papers collected by Beatrice Webb during her service on the Reconstruction Committee. They consist of official documents, letters and typescript notes in standard Webb slip format, concerning employment, national registration and women's work and employment.

Administrative / Biographical History

The role of the Reconstruction Committee involved '...surveying and unravelling the whole tangle of governmental activities' introduced during World War I (1914 - 1918). It was established in early 1917 but by July 1918 had been disbanded, Webb reporting that its '...machinery was too rickety to survive'.
