The University of the Arts London Archives and Special Collections Centre makes available collections that inform, inspire, encourage and excite a diverse range of audiences in support of their creativity, learning and research in the arts, design and communications. It is especially strong in film production material and graphic design. The largest collection is the Stanley Kubrick Archive which covers Kubrick’s (1928-1999) entire career from photographer for Look Magazine to producer and film director. There is material relating to all his movies including some unrealised projects specifically Napoleon and Aryan Papers. There is also material relating to the conception of AI: Artificial Intelligence, which was completed by Steven Spielberg after Kubrick’s death. The Stanley Kubrick Archive includes scripts, letters, research material, photographs, props, costumes, production and publicity materials, equipment and books. Other film-makers represented are Thorold Dickinson (1903-1984); his archive and library relates to his career as a film director for the United Nations and the British government and the establishment of the first full university film studies course at the Slade School of Fine Art. John Schlesinger (1926-2003) is represented by his library which includes his books, film posters, video tapes, sets of storyboards, location research and contact sheets. Graphic Design is represented by the Tom Eckersley Collection, London College of Communication Collection and the Comic Book Collection. Tom Eckersley (1914-1997) was a graphic designer and educator and his collection contains examples of his posters and published works for organisations such as Guinness, London Transport and the General Post Office. The London College of Communication Collection (1893- ) contains materials relating to the activities of the College and its predecessor bodies. It includes prospectuses, student work, yearbooks, photographs and materials relating to printing education. A section of the collection features ephemera representing printing techniques and design trends, for example, illustration plates and 19th century Christmas Cards. The Comic Book Collection includes a wide range of titles from the second half of the 20th century covering UK and the US mainstream and underground comics, and other specialist and international publications. There are also graphic novels, a number of strips and related comic book ephemera such as posters and free gifts.
