University of Nottingham, Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections

The University Library began to collect archives and manuscripts in the 1930s and had built up significant holdings by 1958, when the Department of Manuscripts was formally established. Since 1989 it has also managed rare printed books and local studies material. Now a section of the Research and Learning Resources Division in the University's Information Services, it is housed on Level One of the Hallward Library.

The Department's acquisitions policy aims to build on existing strengths. First, it holds historical papers and archives of the East Midlands region, including family and estate papers as well as the records of hospitals, companies and religious bodies. Secondly, it collects resources relevant to current teaching and research interests, particularly in the areas of local literature, industry, science and medicine. Finally, it holds historical records of The University of Nottingham and private papers of alumni and staff.

The Department's extensive website provides introductions to its holdings and facilities. Collection level records indicate whether finding aids are available in printed form, in browse web form, or through the search interface of FAUN (Finding Aids at The University of Nottingham). Collections mounted in FAUN provide detailed descriptions and browseable indexes.

The resources cover many different subjects from personal and local to international level, ranging in date from the twelfth to the twentieth centuries. A particular strength lies in the large family and estate collections; some including the political papers of members of the families (e.g. the archives of the Dukes of Newcastle and the Dukes of Portland). Notable among the literary papers is the D. H. Lawrence Collection. Ecclesiastical records include archives of the Archdeaconry of Nottingham. Records of river authorities and water companies are very extensive.
