University of Kent Specialist Collections and Academic Archives
The University was founded in 1965 and has acquired archives over the years which support University teaching and research.
Our major focus is upon the theatre, especially during the Edwardian and Victorian eras. These collections include the Dion Boucicault Collection, the Melville Collection (a theatrical dynasty spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries) and the Pettingell Collection, which comprises scripts in manuscript and typescript form. We also have a substantial collection of modern theatre material, including Jack Reading’s theatre collection of programmes and books. We are looking to build upon this.
Other major collections include the Hewlett Johnson Papers (a Dean of Canterbury Cathedral and a communist), the papers of Lord Bernard Weatherill (Speaker of the House of Commons 1983-1992) and the Maddison Collection of science and technology books, mainly dating from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In addition, we have several collections relating to the history of mills, including the Muggeridge Collection of mill photographs and the C.P. Davies collection comprising of information, photographs and ephemera related to wind and watermills.
We hope to make as many of these collections available as possible.
