Archives Hub Contributors

University of Essex

The University of Essex is fortunate in having a hub of social science expertise, in the form of a number of RAE 5-star rated departments and established key research resources in the field. These key resources include four major archival resources that serve both the national and international social science and historical research community: the Albert Sloman Library Special Collections; the UK Data Archive, the History Data Service, the Qualitative Data Service.

The Special Collections Room in the Albert Sloman Library currently holds some 36 named collections of books, manuscripts and contemporary archives, together with a general sequence which is arranged by subject together with a general classified sequence of rare and valuable books. In all, holdings amount to over 24,500 printed works and 360 m of archives and "grey literature", most of which has been acquired by way of donation. Current holdings, of which there are 36 distinct collections, are quite diverse, ranging from the Sigmund Freud Collection which comprises a large body of volumes, photocopies and typescripts of letters, to the archive of the Social Democratic Party.

The UK Data Archive is a specialist national resource containing the largest collection of accessible computer readable data in the social sciences and humanities in the United Kingdom.

The History Data Service collects, preserves, and promotes the use of digital resources, which result from or support historical research, learning and teaching. The Qualitative Data Service (Qualidata) provides a national service for the acquisition, dissemination and re-use of qualitative data from the social science research. It is a specialist unit housed within the UK Data Archive.
