
University of Aberdeen
King's College and University of Aberdeen, founded 1495, united with Marischal College, founded 1593, to form the University of Aberdeen in 1860. Until the 1970s it was the main repository for archival material in the North and North East of Scotland. Its extensive holdings comprise, besides the institution's own archives and medieval and oriental manuscripts, family, estate and personal papers and the records of North East businesses and organisations, all of which are the main areas in which it continues to collect.
317 entries have been submitted to the Hub, representing 805 individual deposits; on-going submissions are intended, bringing the total number of deposits represented to c 1000.Particular strengths are extensive estate papers relating to the North East of Scotland and further afield, including connections with North and Central America and India; history of education over 500 years; ecclesiastical history; medical history; local business, industrial and labour history; Scottish Enlightenment; whaling; 19th century photographs.
