RNCM. Royal Northern College of Music

Royal Northern College of Music Archives

The RNCM was established in 1973 following the merger of the Royal Manchester College of Music (1893-1973) and the Northern School of Music (1920-1973). The foundations of the Archive were laid by the Registrars of the RMCM, who not only ensured the organisational records were well maintained, but also secured the gift of personal papers beginning with those of the violinist Adolph Brodsky (the RMCM's second Principal).

Today the Archive acquires materials relating to the RNCM and its predecessors, and the papers of individuals with significant College connections.

The Archives comprise 18 main collections, all of which will be available on the Hub. Organisational archives of the Northern School of Music and the Royal Manchester College of Music; and the performing archive of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. There are also personal papers and other items covering the entire careers of the violinists Adolph Brodksy and Philip Newman, the soprano Elizabeth Harwood, and Walter and Ida Carroll - both prominent in musical education in the region. Among the other holdings are correspondence of Sir Charles Hallé with EJ Broadfield, Gustav Behrens and others.

The compositions of Alan Rawsthorne, John Ogdon, and Thomas Pitfield, all with related papers and other materials, form a significant part of the total holdings. There are also numerous compositions of Arthur Butterworth and John Golland, and a collection of music in autograph manuscript including works by Delius.

Special feature: Manchester Histories Festival.
