Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University Belfast was originally established as 'Queen's College, Belfast' in 1845 as one of three colleges in Ireland. It was raised to the status of a full university in 1908 with its own Charter and Statutes. The Special Collections at Queen's University Library comprise the Library's rare and early printed books, map and manuscript collections, as well as more modern material relating to Ireland, and Ulster in particular. The books, pamphlets, manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and maps held in Special Collections are considered to be of lasting research value and include incunabula, STC and Wing items.

Special Collections is open to the academic community at QUB and outside researchers. An appointment is not necessary, though it may be useful to contact the Office in advance if reference assistance is needed.

The Manuscript Collections comprise material from the twelfth century on, with a particular bias towards the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Papers relating to politics, music and language in eighteenth century Ireland contrast with politics, culture and business in nineteenth and early twentieth century China. Included in the collections are the personal and literary papers of Irish writers Somerville and Ross, Ulster writers Helen Waddell, William Allingham and Thomas Carnduff amongst others, notes and papers of academics Thomas Andrews, James Thomson, R.M. Henry and Charles MacDouall.

We hope to make thirty one manuscript collections available on the Archives Hub.
