The Sherardian Library of Plant Taxonomy, University of Oxford dates from around 1621, and is founded on the former Plant Sciences Library which itself held collections in botany, forestry and agriculture. In 2010 the majority of the Plant Sciences library’s collections were transferred to the Radcliffe Science Library, University of Oxford. The present Sherardian Library retains much of the University’s books relating to plant taxonomy and a rich set of special collections in botany.
The Library has one archival collection, the Sherard collection, which has been described on the Archives Hub. The collection primarily consists of the papers of Keepers of the Botanic Garden, and Oxford Professors of Botany and Rural Economy. Amongst the collection are Ferdinand Bauer's 966 original drawings for the Flora Graeca of J. Sibthorp and J. E. Smith. The library also holds many of the personal papers of the botanist George Claridge Druce (1850-1832) some of which are also described on the Archives Hub.
Please note that that consultation of material in the Sherardian Library is strictly by appointment only.
