The Open University appointed a professional archivist in 1999 to manage the records of the University. The archive houses a small, but significant, collection of material. This includes records of the University itself, records associated with the history of the Open University and of distance education, papers related to research interests of the Open University and papers of individuals connected to the Open University. A new Library building is currently being built on campus, due for completion end of 2003, which will contain dedicated space for the storage and use of the archive.
The Open University Library has contributed a small number of its collections to the Hub. These include the papers of Jennie Lee, the first Minister for Arts who was largely responsible for the foundation of the Open University, the papers of Betty Boothroyd, Chancellor of the Open University, and the papers of Walter Perry, the first Vice-Chancellor of the Open University. Records of the Open University itself and its research collections may be added at a later date.
