Lothian Health Services Archive

The Archive was founded in the late 1960s as the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Archive, and was housed in the hospital itself. In 1981 it was renamed as the Medical Archive Centre, and it moved into Edinburgh University Library in 1988. It was renamed again in 1996 as Lothian Health Services Archive. The current Archivist is Dr Mike Barfoot. The Archive primarily collects records of long term legal, administrative, epidemiological and historical value produced by the NHS within the Lothian area, including those of predecessor bodies. In addition, non-NHS institutional records and personal papers related to the local history of health care and the history of Scottish medicine are also collected.

The records of 153 collections were put on the Hub during the one-year project period, with more collections to follow in future as they are completed. Currently this represents about 95 per cent of LHSA holdings. The main strengths of the collections are administrative and clinical records of hospitals in the Edinburgh and surrounding area, from 1690 through to the present day. LHSA also holds one of the largest collections of folder-based twentieth century personal health records, covering some 1500 linear metres.
