Keele University

Special Collections and Archives, Keele Information Services: Library

Established in the 1950s with the purchase of a large collection of miscellaneous manuscripts (Raymond Richards) the Archives and Special Collections at Keele constitute a valuable tool for teaching and research purposes, both within the University and beyond. Collections are acquired by deposit, gift and purchase, and the range is impressive for an institution of Keele's age and size.

Descriptions of 23 of our collections are on the Hub, with the largest and most frequently used being Wedgwood, Sneyd and the Local Collection. Add Arnold Bennett, Spode, Wilfred Bloor (dialect) and our William Jack collection (North Staffordshire mining and railways) and it can be seen that material relating to the social and industrial history of the Potteries is our particular strength. Keele also holds several relatively small, yet internationally important collections of personal and research papers. These are Lindsay, Mannheim, J C Wedgwood and T E Hulme.

At present we are undertaking a major cataloguing/digitisation project on our Foundations of Sociology Archive (LePlay). Through the project, this material on the intellectual development of the social science movement will become a major tool for teaching and research.
