Hull University Archives at Hull History Centre

Archival and manuscript materials have been acquired by donation, deposit and purchase, since the first days of the University and its initial establishment as Hull University College in 1928. There are now over 120 large and over 300 small collections, amounting to hundreds of thousands of documents and files, dating from the late 11th century to almost the present day.

The University Archives has various subject specialisms and has established collection strengths based around records of individuals and organisations of regional, national and international importance linked to these subjects. Main specialist areas are: the University of Hull and Hull University College, individuals associated with, the University of Hull; pressure groups, political campaigns, movements or associations; labour and political history, including papers of MPs; modern English literature and drama; maritime activities, including seafaring, shipping, fishing and shipbuilding; landed families and estates centred around the East and North Ridings. The most significant and substantial collections include the archives of Liberty (formerly The National Council for Civil Liberties), from the 1930s onwards; and papers of Philip Larkin, including poetry workbooks, letters, photographs and his personal library and LP collection.

Hull University Archives is now located at Hull History Centre, together with Hull City Council archives and local studies material. As of 25th January 2010, all resources, including significant local collections in areas such as maritime history and modern literature can be accessed as part of a joint service.

Descriptions of 160 collections have been submitted to the Archives Hub. These fall into the following areas: landed family and estate papers; solicitors' archives; religious archives; modern political papers; labour and trade union archives; pressure group archives; business archives; modern English literary manuscripts; South East Asian manuscripts; parish records and other local history collections.
