Glasgow Women's Library

Glasgow Women's Library

Glasgow Women’s Library was established in 1991. It grew out of the women’s arts-orientated project, Women in Profile (1987).  The library houses a huge collection of materials by, for and about women, all of which has been donated by users, supporters, members and publishers.  The library currently has no budget for the acquisition of new materials.

Glasgow Women’s Library is a unique resource in Scotland, housing key information by, for and about women. The library is particularly strong in terms of its collection of second wave feminist materials, which include key feminist theory texts, journals, newsletters, badges, banners, t-shirts, leaflets and other related campaigning materials. The library also holds the national Lesbian Archive and Information Centre (LAIC), which was set up in London in 1984 (and relocated to Glasgow in 1995).  This is the UK’s largest and most significant collection of materials about lesbian lives, achievements and activism.  The library also holds archive materials from several organisations, including the Scottish Abortion Campaign, Women’s Aid and the Family Planning Association in Scotland.
