The Courtauld Institute of Art was established in 1932 and it has had a library since inception. It is uncertain when The Institute began accepting archive collections as there is little documentation about the early collections. The archives are held in the Book Library and are donations, many of which accompanied the bequests of books. The Book Library is only able to accept donations of archival material that complements what is already held in the collections, with particular reference to the teaching papers and/or research papers of art historians who have had some association with The Courtauld, such as faculty members or former students. The Courtauld does not purchase archives and listing of material is contingent on obtaining funding to employ a suitably qualified person to undertake the task.
The strength of the collections are the research papers of various academics, which provide insight into the work habits of those art historians. There are 14 collections listed on the Hub. At present, the Book Library has one unlisted archive, Stella Mary Newton. It is hoped that, once it is catalogued, it will be added to the Hub.
