Chetham's Library was founded in 1653 and is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. The Library began acquiring books and manuscripts in 1655, and has been adding to its collections ever since. As well as a fine collection of early printed books, the collections include a wealth of manuscripts and archives, including personal papers, antiquarian papers, charity, estate and institutional collections dating from the twelfth to the twenty-first century. Since the middle of the nineteenth century Chetham's Library has specialised in the history and topography of the north west of England, and many of the manuscripts and archives are of local and regional significance.
Chetham's Library is an independent charity and is open to readers and visitors free of charge.
