Downing College, Cambridge

The Archive records the history of Downing College from its first inception, through its foundation to the very recent past. Its oldest document is the marriage settlement of Sir George Downing (1683), the father of the College’s founder, and it includes the College’s founding charter (1800) and the minutes of Downing’s Governing Body right up to 10 years ago.

In summary, the collections include:

  • pre and post foundation records of the Downing estates, and of the Downing family, dating back to the 16th century
  • records of student bodies and organisations
  • official and formal administrative and governance records
  • thousands of photos, maps and plans
  • papers of Fellows and old members

The Archive is perhaps best known for its collection of architectural drawings that document its building history. You can read more about theĀ architectural history.
