Balliol College was founded on its present site in Broad Street, Oxford, around 1263. The records have been generated and accrued within the College throughout its history. They have been assembled, organized and listed by Dr JH Jones, Vice-Master and Fellow Archivist, from the 1970s onwards. Title deeds and estate papers survive from the 13th century onwards, and administrative records from the early 16th. Balliol Archives holds the historical records of the college's ordinary business; Balliol's extensive collections of medieval and early modern manuscripts, early printed books and 19th - 20th century personal papers are held in the Library. The archive is a useful resource for the study of college history, local and family history for people and places connected to Balliol, and individual former members of the College.
